Laker grounded on Saginaw River

The 'Calumet' was caught by strong wind gusts and pushed out of the fairway of the Saginaw River in the Bay City area, Michigan, in the evening of Oct 21, 2021. The accident happened en route from Detroit to Saginaw with a cargo of 19,000 tons of limestone. The vessel got stuck in the embankment, and all traffic lanes through the river, as well as passage on the Lake State Railroad Bridge. were blocked. A tug was called to assist in refloating the vessel in the morning of Oct 22. Laker damaged by ice

On Apr 6, 2018, the "Calumet" was damaged by ice above the Soo Locks, Sault St. Marie, on the St. Marys River, between the Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, proceeding upstream. The bulkcarrier was taken back to the Soo Locks for temporary repairs. On Apr 8 it left Sault St. Marie, bound for Toledo to complete repairs, ETA Apr 9.

Calumet Refloated, Traffic Back to Normal in Soo Locks

The cargo vessel Calumet, a 629-foot ship that ran aground on the north side of Sugar Island Wednesday, was refloated Friday, Aug 11., at approximately 8:50 PM local time, after the United States Coast Guard approved a salvage plan submitted by Grand River Navigation, the vessel’s owner. The St. Marys River, which had been closed to commercial vessel traffic from the Soo Locks to Six Mile Point following the grounding, was reopened at 9:30 p.m. Friday after the Army Corp of Engineers surveyed the bottom of the river in the vicinity of the grounding and found that no debris was obstructing the channel.
