RNLI saved five from sinking vessel

Thu Oct 29 13:25:00 CET 2015 Timsen

Five fishermen were rescued from the "CKS" in the morning of Oct 28, 2015, by the Angle lifeboat. The crew of the vessel, which fishes out of Milford Haven, issued a Mayday call at 2.02 a.m. to say that they had hit rocks and were taking on water and sinking rapidly off Rat Island, at the entrance to the Milford Haven Waterway. The Angle all-weather lifeboat was tasked to the incident and was on the scene within 15 minutes of the initial emergency call. As the lifeboat arrived, the fishing boat was in shallow water off West Angle Bay, with the pilot vessel standing off. The rescue vessel manoeuvred alongside the fishing boat and transferred two lifeboat crew members with a salvage pump onboard the stricken vessel. They attempted to save the fishing boat, however the skipper soon decided that the it was unsafe and ordered his crew and the two RNLI volunteers to abandon the vessel into a liferaft. Once the liferaft was clear of the sinking boat the all-weather lifeboat recovered the crew, and made their way back to Milford Haven. None of the fishermen required hospital attention; they were handed over to St Govans coastguards at Milford Haven. The lifeboat returned to Angle lifeboat station at 3:35am. A local pilot vessel also attended the incident. The coastguard rescue helicopter was also tasked to the scene but subsequently stood down. The stricken vessel was resting on rocks in the West Angle Bay and was monitored by the Natural Resources Wales. At the moment no pollution has happened, and diesel and hydraulic oil on the boat did not appear to have leaked. They were working with the Milford Haven Port Authority to put a boom in place if any pollutants leaked. Engine failure caused lifeboat to launch

Mon Jul 09 10:25:12 CEST 2012 Timsen

The RNLI-lifeboat "Diamond Jubilee" from Eastbourne was called in the early morning of July 8, 2012, to assist the "CKS" which had lost power and was drifting perilously close to busy shipping lanes. The "Diamond Jubilee" was launched shortly after 5 a.m. after the crew of the "CKS" had reported to Dover Coastguard that the ship had suffered an engine failure and was drifting helplessly close to the south-west shipping lanes in the English Channel. The vessel, with five people on board, had departed from Brixham before and was nine miles off Eastbourne when it was left drifting in the tide. Unable to repair their engine at sea, the fishermen were forced to call for assistance. Once the "Diamond Jubilee" was on scene, a towing connection was established and the fishing vessel taken toward Sovereign Harbour. When within a mile of the harbour, Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat was launched to assist with the difficult manoeuvre of guiding the stricken vessel through the harbour entrance, into the locks and onto a safe berth within the marina.
