Body found in wheelhouse

The body of one missing crew member of the 'Byakko' was found in the wheelhouse near the ship's stern on May 30. The master and two officers of the ferry were still missing. No pollution from the ship has been reported. However, the Japan Coast Guard continued monitoring the site for pollution while it continues the search for the missing people. It was unclear how much fuel and other pollutants were on board the ferry. The wreck of the ship was resting at an estimated depth of 70 metres.

Crew member found unresponsive

One crew member of the 'Byakko' was recovered in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest on May 30 near the sinking site. Japanese Coast Guard ships and aircraft have been searching since May 28 for three missing crew members in the Seto Inland Sea. Japan’s Transport Safety Board is conducting an investigation on board the chemical tanker 'Ulsan Pioneer' which remained near the accident site.

Three missing after collision

Three people were missing after the 'Byakko' capsized and sank on May 28, 2021, at 2.45 a.m. following a collision with the Marshall Islands-flagged chemical tanker 'Ulsan Pioneer' on May 27 at 11.55 p.m. in the Seto Inland Sea. The incident occurred off the Ehime Prefecture, and the Imabari Coast Guard Office responded. The 'Byakko' had 12 crew members aboard. The missing were the captain Tamotsu Sato, 66, 1st engineer Yuki Ogawa, 27, and 2nd engineer Takahiro Uehata, 22, all Japanese nationalities. Five crew members were collected by a Coast Guard patrol vessel. and four by a nearby container ship. The chemical tanker had 13 crew members — eight from South Korea and five from Myanmar — and no serious injuries have been reported among them. The ship suffered significant damage to its bow but remained afloat. The 'Byakko' had left port in Kobe on May 27 at 4:30 p.m., headed to Kanda in the Fukuoka Prefecture with a cargo of vehicle parts.
