Fire on bulkcarrier

Wed Mar 27 12:42:04 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Burns Harbor" was towed back to a mooring area at Fincantieri/Bay Shipbuilding in the morning of March 26, 2019, after at 8.15 a.m. a fire broke out on the vessel while it was heading out to Lake Michigan. The ship’s crew, with support from the US Coast Guard and the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, was able to extinguish the fire in the bow of the ship. The blaze appeared to have been caused by some sort of electrical problem. The Coast Guard responded with its 29-foot boat and crew, four Sturgeon Bay firefighters were sent to the vessel and several tugs also responded. When it was clear the smoky fire was out, the decision was made to tow the large vessel, which was situated just beyond the Bay View Bridge, on the lake side, back to Bay Ship. Tugs, pulling the "Burns Harbor" from the rear, were able to move it to a mooring area after passing through all three of the city’s bridges shortly before noon. The ship sailed from Sturgeon Bay on April 4 at 03.20 a.m. Report with photo: https://www.wdor.com/news/news-ticker/burns-harbor-towed-back-to-bay-ship-shortly-after-leaving/

A Coast Guard boat crew medically evacuated a man in the4 afternoon of Nov 23, 2013, from the "Burns Harbor" in the Straits of Mackinac. At 1 p.m., a search-and-rescue controller at the Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie, Mich., was contacted by the captain of the vessel requesting assistance with the medical evacuation of a 37-year-old man. The man was reportedly suffering abdominal pains and had collapsed and lost consciousness for two minutes. After conferring with the on-duty flight surgeon, the ship was directed to make way for St. Ignace, Mich., where they wo uld be met by a Coast Guard crew who would take the man to safety. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Ignace and an emergency medical technician from emergency medical services launched aboard a rescue boat and met the Burns Harbor one mile east of the station in Lake Huron. The rescue crew transferred the man to the rescue boat. The man was taken to the Coast Guard station where EMS further transported him to the Mackinac Straits Rural Health Clinic in St. Ignace.
