Ship's master imprisoned for being drunk at the helm
The 64-year old Master of the "Brin Navolok" was sentenced to four months in prison at the Barrow Crown Court on Nov 10, 2016, after he pleaded guilty of having been drunk at the helm. The vessel barely missed a collision with another vessel on Nov 8 at 2.45 p.m. while entering Barrow-in-Furness with a pilot on board. The vessel avoided collision thanks to the pilot, who ordered a tug to push freighter to safety. The master was breathalyzed at the scene, with the test showing he had 80 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, well above the legal limit of 35. He had spent the afternoon drinking vodka in celebration of his grandchild's first birthday. The ship was returning hired equipment to Barrow used on oil rigs in Russia. The vessel has been moored at Associated British Ports Barrow since the incident. Another captain will have to travel from Russia to sail the ship.
Ship stuck in ice free after two weeks
On Nov 30, 2014, the "Brin-Navolok" was free again, taken under ice escort on Nov 30 by the icebreaker "Tor" (IMO: 5418197). The vessel had been stuck in ice since Nov 16 with 1300 tons of general cargo on board off Varandey and had requested assistance.
