Vasilios N to be auctioned in Valletta

Fri Jun 10 10:31:44 CEST 2011 Timsen

The crew of the "Vasilios N" could finally be on their way home soon after a ruling by a court in Malta which gave formal permission on June 8, 2011, for the sale by auction of the "Vasilios N". The auction has been scheduled for June 28. The proceeds will be used to finance the crew's return home. The ship had docked in Misurata in summer 2010 and was impounded following a legal dispute with the contractual owner of its cargo of cement powder, which had been partially damaged in a storm. The Italian owners failed to provide any assistance to its crew of six Georgians, three Ukrainians, and one Azerbaijani. The crew finally managed to sail from Misurata in early March 2011, navigating by the stars as the ship's navigational equipment had been damaged in a fire.

On Mar 10, 2011, the "Vasilios N" reached Malta anchorage after it escaped the Libyan civil war after having been berthed in Misurat for 10 months. As the navigational aids were out of order, the captain had to guide the ship by the postion of the stars. The ship in May 2010 had transported construction goods to Libya but the cargo had suffered storm damage. The freight owner refused to receive the cargo thus, and the ship had remained in port since.
