Crew member injurd by snapping line

Mon Jun 19 12:14:40 CEST 2017 Timsen

On June 17, 2017, a crew member of the "Bergstraum" which was berthed in the port of Cork has been airlifted to hospital with a suspected broken leg after an accident on board the vessel. The casualty was winched from the bow of the Norwegian-flagged oil and chemical tanker which was berthed at the Tivoli docks east of Cork city around 7 p.m. this evening by the crew of the Waterford-based Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 117. The crewman suffered the leg injury when either a cable or rope snapped as he worked on board, striking one of his legs. Members of Cork City Fire Brigade and Crosshaven Coast Guard attended the scene. But the fire service was unable to remove the casualty from the vessel safely.

Tanker in near collision with bridge

Wed Apr 26 11:45:42 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Bergstraum" was in a near collision with a dredger and the Spijkenisse Bridge in Moerdijk on Apr 24, 2017, at 09.43. The cause was a malfunction of the moving bridge section keeping it from being opened in time. The chemical tanker which was coming from Dordrecht, had to make an emergency stop and could turn away only a few meters away from the bridge with a hard astern manoever. A dreder on the Hoogvliets side had to be quickly removed to avoid being hit by the tanker. Initially the moving part of the Spijkenisse bridge could not go up and down, but could be reset with manual force, followed by a test run which went well. The bridge had to rise because there was a lot of shipping traffic but in the decisive moment failed to do so. It was still unclear whether the captain got green light to pass the bridge or if it was a negligence from his side. Rijkswaterstaat launched an investigation into the incident as well as the cause of the bridge failure. The tanker once the bridge was open again around noon continued towards the Northsea destined to Alesund with an ETA of Apr 26.
