Supply ship started to list
On Jan 21, 2018, the "Baltic Betina", which serves the Galapagos islands, started to heel to port in the afternoon in the vicinity of San Cristobal Island in the bay of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The authorities declared an emergency, and hours later regained the stability of the ship. Already in November 2017 the ship had already suffered damage to its crane, which prevented it from sailing from Guayaquil to Galapagos with merchandise goods. Crane damage delayed supply trip
The "Vera" arrived at Guayaquil to make her first trip to the Galapagos this week to carry goods that the "Baltic Betina" had not been able to transfer, which had suffered damage to its crane. The ship was loaded in the municipal dock of the Caraguay and sailed with 202 20-ft-containers 26 40-ft-containers and loose merchandise as well as eight cars. Near Puná island, the "Vera" reported a fire on Nov 20, 2017, and had to be towed back to Guayaquil where it arrived at the Contacon dock in the afternoon of Nov 21. The 3,000 tons of cargo destined for the archipelago now were well behind the delivery schedule and enforced the activation of a contingency plan. Transnave, the company responsible for the "Vera", sent a technician to check the damage. If necessary, the "Orca" and the "BAE Calicuchima" will transport perishable food and LPG cylinders to the Galapagos Islands.
