Mammoet Salvage about to complete wreck removal

Tue May 21 09:43:55 CEST 2013 Timsen

The sheerleg "Schiedam", the accommodation & work barge "Crest Support 1" and the salvage barge "MSV 3301" as a support barge flr the divers are actually working to remove the "B. Oceania" wreck. The barge is used for cutting the wreck pieces and preparations of the wreck pieces before lifting the wreckage with slings and chains. Mammoet Salvage was awarded the wreck removal contract of the "B. Oceania§ which was located in the very busy shipping lane. First the salvage company started removing the cargo, which was 68.000 tons iron ore, and transported the cargo to the shore with barges where it was disposed to shore base facilities. Upon completion of this task the wreck was cut in pieces using the cutting barge "MSB 3301" and in continuation the ships parts where lifted out by sheerlegs and placed on barges for transportation to the shore for disposal and scrapping. Actually only three ship sections are left on the seabed which are beging prepared by divers for the lift from the seabed which is expected to take place before the end of May 2013. The whole work took nearly 1,5 year to complete. The bulker had sunk on July 29, 20122, in the Malacca Straits after it collided with the "Xin Tai" following a failure of both of her generators, resulting in a complete loss of power. While the ship’s emergency generator quickly restored limited power, the vessel was left without its main engine and soon lost speed. The crew had switched on the ‘Not Under Command’ lights and placed a direct call to the "Xin Tai Hai", which was known to be nearby, but received no reply. The "Xin Tai Hai" apparently made no effort to steer clear and struck the "B. Oceania" on starboard side in hold No. 1, then hold No. 3. The "B. Oceania" split in two and sank in a water depth of 35-40 meters.

B OCEANIA 8806515

Sat Jul 30 09:15:54 CEST 2011 odinfm

Bulk carrier B Oceania was enroute India – China loaded with ore. Vessel disabled and blackouted near Singapore, presumably on July 29 2011. Crew managed to switch on auxiliary generator, lights were on, but a capsize bulk carrier (crew think it was Chinese) struck B Oceania, and ran away. Vessel broke in two and sank, crew evacuated in lifeboats, one crew was seriously injured. Crew tried to attract attention of passing ships, but they passed by, crew was rescued by a boxship several hours later and taken to Singapore. Now crew is in Singapore in hotel, buying everything from clothes to tooth paste. Investigation under way, looks like Chinese capesize is already figured out. Maritime bulletin www.odin.tc
