Fire on German navy launch tackled off Rostock
On the afternoon of Aug 7, 2024, a fire broke out in the engine room of the German Navy 10-m-launch 'V 3', within sight of the beach in Rostock-Warnemünde. dark smoke from the traffic boat was visible from afar. At around 3:50 p.m., the two crew members on the boat sent a "Mayday" call about three-quarters of a nautical mile from Warnemünde. The fire quickly spread to the entire boat. The MRCC Bremen of the DGzRS deployed the 'Arkona' /Warnemünde station and nearby government ships to assist. Shortly afterwards, a small rescue boat from the German Red Cross (DRK) water rescue service, which ensures bathing on Warnemünde beach, reached the scene, rescued the two crew members and brought them safely to shore, where they were cared for by the shore-based rescue service, which was already on standby. The Ärkona' started fire fighting with its two large fire monitors. and brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. A short time later, the fire boat "Albert Wegener" from the Rostock fire brigade and the multi-purpose ship "Arkona" from the Waterways and Shipping Administration reached the scene and took over further fire fighting. The tug 'Fairplay 56' towed the burnt out wreck to the port of the Hohe Düne naval base. The water police have begun investigations. Angler rescued within 15 minutes, but later died
A 45-year-old angler had a fatal accident on the Warnow in the morning of Feb 4, 2023. The man had fallen from a rubber dinghy into the water near the Rostock fishing port. At around 10:55 a.m., the emergency situation was reported to the DGzRS. The 'Arkona' was alerted and along with its daughter boat which was on a training at the time, made its way to the scene of the accident. In addition, the police boat "Uecker" of the Rostock police and the survey ship "Capella" of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency were used for support. The rescuers arrived at the scene of the accident around ten minutes later, and just five minutes later they found the casualty and pulled him on board the 'Caspar'. The immediately initiated the necessary resuscitation measures and headed for a nearby pier. There the patient was handed over to the rescue service, but he later died in a hospital. The police boat "Uecker" was able to secure the rubber dinghy. The water police have started investigating how the accident happened.
Lifeboat kept schooner afloat
The German 36-m-charter yacht „Skythia“, 55 dwt (classifikation GL D046-050-06 Klasse BR 100 A5) ran aground on Nov 2, 2016, with a crew of six on board enroute from Wismar to Greifswald off the breakwater of Warnemünde and suffered a breach with ensuing water ingress. The "Arkona" of the DGzRS station Warnemünde was alerted at 5.46 p.m. and attended the schooner which had managed to back off with own power and kept it afloat with dewatering pumps while it was escorted to the Hohe Düne Marina in Warnemünde. The leak was then patched by the crew of the "Arkona" and the ship prohibited to leave until sufficient repairs have been carried out.
