Crane removal has started

Tue Mar 03 10:06:36 CET 2020 Timsen

Almost three months months after the 'APL Mexico City' went adrift in Antwerp on Dec 9 and hit a gantry crane of 130 meters height, the sheerleg 'Brabo' on March 3 started to remove the collapsed crane from the waters of the Scheldt at the Deurganck dock at quay 1702 (DP World). To date, a part of the dock has been closed for shipping since. Buoys kept shipping informed, and it was possible to pass by the site with the necessary caution. At 8.30 a.m., the sheerleg 'Brabo' of the Antwerp Port Authority started removing debris from the water. Afterwards the sonar boat 'Echo' will scan the bottom to see if all the debris and obstacles have been cleared. Once all the debris is gone, ship traffic in the Deurganck dock is free again without restrictions. The 'APL Mexico City' had left Antwerp again on Dec 15 and headed to Brest, where it was under repair from Dec 17 until Jan 20. The ship was being moored off Felixstowe in pos. 51° 55.95' N 001° 42.63' E. It berthed in Coryton from March 11-12, before heading to Rotterdam where it arrived on March 13, finally returning to operation.

Crane removal will take some weeks

Wed Dec 11 11:18:43 CET 2019 Timsen

While activities of the container company DP World at the Deurganck dock in Doel were resumed, the works to remove the collapsed crane will take a few more weeks. After it was hit by the "APL Mexico City", it collapsed completely. A safety perimeter has now been defined around the site of the accident. On Nov 9 at 10 p.m. handling of ships and trucks was resumed. To keep up, it will be extra busy at the terminal in the coming days. Additional trucks will be handled within the available time slots to make up for the backlog. The removal of the crane was due to start as quickly as possible in collaboration with specialized services, making every effort to minimize the impact on operations. The crane will be replaced in the long term. The 'APL Mexico City' remained moored at quay 1700 until further notice. She left the port again on Dec 15 at 3.40 p.m. after having been unloaded. The ship was headed to Brest where it berthed at the Damen Shiprepair Yard at 4 p.m. She completed its repairs on Jan 20 at 2.30 p.m. and left the port towards the North Atlantic.

DP World resumes operations

Tue Dec 10 13:20:19 CET 2019 Timsen

After the accident of the 'APL Mexico City' in the Deurganck Dock in the Waasland Port of Antwerp DP World has resumed its operations at the terminal on Dec 10. DP World Antwerp will handle additional trucks within the available time slots to make up for the backlog. The 'APL Mexico City' was docked at PSA on the other side of the dock when it broke loose due to the strong wind and hit a quay crane at DP World. The crane collapsed and ended up partly in the water. The vessel remains docked at DP World until further notice because it suffered damage and must first be repaired. No people were injured during the entire incident. The terminal operator will start work on remove the debris of the crane as soon as possible in collaboration with specialized services. These works may take a few weeks. The affected crane was located on a less intensively used part of the quay and was used for smaller services. DP World made every effort to minimize the impact on operations. The crane will be replaced in the long term.
