Blumenthal freighter detained
Australia's Maritime Safety Agency has detained the "Anna-Elisabeth" in Port Kembla on March 26, 2019, at berth 102 while it investigated several complaints from its crew about working conditions on board. 17 crew members from Sri Lanka and the Philippines claimed there was not enough food and a ban on shore leave and their working conditions were unsafe. The ship of the Johann M. K. Blumenthal and Co. in Hamburg was being held until investigations were completed. The food stores were described as substandard during an inspection. There was food on board but it was not enough for 17 men for the next 14 days. The crew was also unable to leave the ship. The AMSA confirmed it had received complaints from the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the ITWF on behalf of the ship's crew members relating to insufficient food supplies aboard the ship and mistreatment of the crew. The "Anna Elisabeth" had arrived in port on March 24, coming from Tianjin. After the ship was released it sailed from Port Kembla on March 28 at 1.20 p.m. bound to Singapore, ETA Apr 13.
