Cargo ship sank in Black Sea while violating Crimean sanctions, one missing
The "Anda" capsized and sank off Sevastopol in the Black Sea in the morning of July 29, 2017, 40 km south of the town of Alupka, on a water depth of about 1.000 meters. The vessel with a cargo of 2.400 tons wheat was en route from Kerch to Tripoli. Of the nine crew members, among them Syrians and Indians, eight were rescued, one went missing. An SAR operation was launched by three Navy boats and an Mi-8-helicopter of the airforce at 6.40 a.m. The Greek bulkcarrier "Minoan Grace" (IMO: 9605839) recovered the castaways, three of them were picked up from a life boat, then another five from a life raft. The rescue was hampered by wave heights of three meters. The rescued crew members were dropped off at Yalta. The "Anda" had been caught in a storm after leaving Kerch port. By calling a Crimean port, the vessel had violated sanctions imposed on Crimean shipping. Only in July the "Anda" had docked at Kerch three times, prior to her last call.
