Canal obstruction removed
The salvage of the Polish flagged, self propelled barge "Isala", 1121 ts (EU-No.: 02204465), which was sunk by the "Amelia" one week ago, was successful. The floating cranes were able to raise the wreck in one piece in the foremidday of Oct 8. It was dewatered and made as water tight as possibles. The ship was then fixed to a pontoon and moved into a canal port. On Oct 9 at daylight it was to be towed to Schiedam and returned to the Polish owner there. The canal was completely re-opened for ship traffic at 5 p.m. Dutch reports with photos and video: http://www.omroepzeeland.nl/nieuws/2014-10-08/749384/scheepvaart-schelde-rijnkanaal-verlost-van-wrak#.VDWbS8jwDIU http://www.nu.nl/binnenland/3898591/stremming-schelde-rijnkanaal-voorbij.html
Ship sunk by Amelia is being raised
In the morning of Oct 8 the "Isala" which sank after having been hit at starboard side and sunk by the "Amelia" was being raised on the Scheldt-Rhine-Canal. The ship traffic was barred during the salvage work. The work under supervision of Rijkswaterstaat started at 06:00 a.m. It was expected that the fairway would be fully available for shipping again in the night. Vessel traffic will be duly informed. During the recent days the cargo, 1,000 tons of salt were removed from the ship and the lifting operation prepared. To prevent oil from getting into the environment, the wreck site was surrounded with oil booms. Around 10 a.m., the aft was being dewatered with the foreship above water but still water pouring in. Barge sunk by cruise ship to be raised by Hebo
the Polish barge "Isala", 1121 ts (EU-No.: 02204465), which sank after collision with the "Amelia" (EU-No.: 07001948) on Oct 2, will be raised by the Hebo Maritime Service from the bottom of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal at New Vossemeer. On Oct 6 the company was lightering the cargo of more than 1000 tons salt from the wreck. On Sep 7 slings are to be fixed at the ship so that on 'Oct 7 two floating cranes "Hebolift 5" and "Hebolift 8" jointly with an offshore pontoon with a 200-ton crane may raise the vessel. The Polish owner wanted to organize the salvage himself, but Rijkswaterstaat took over instead. It was assumed that the "Isala" would be scrapped afterwards because the insurance cover was too low to cover the repair costs. The "Amelia" had proceeded to Antwerp on Oct 3 and proceeded further to Hans Weert, Nijmegen and Amsterdam on Oct 4/5, returning to Nijmegen on Oct 6.
