Fire on tanker off New York

The US Coast Guard coordinated the response to the "Amber Bay" that suffered an engine room fire as it began to depart the New York Harbor area, in the night of Dec 19. 2018. The asphalt carrier with 22 crew members aboard reported the fire shortly before 8:00 p.m. The crew was able to quickly extinguish it using their installed fire suppression system. At 8:05 p.m., the crew alerted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York about the fire and that the vessel was now disabled approximately three miles south of Breezy Point. The Coast Guard Cutter "Shrike", an 87-foot Patrol Boat, and crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook aboard a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat were dispatched to the incident along with NYPD and FDNY marine units. FDNY personnel boarded the vessel and entered the engine room to ensure the fire was extinguished. A safety zone was established and a plan was being developed to salvage the vessel. There were no reported injuries or pollution. The tug "Sarah D" (IMO: 7400510) was deployed to the tanker which was anchored in pos. 40° 30.13' N 073° 55.59' W.

The "Feng Huang Ao" suffered a fire in the engine room in the morning of Oct 5, 2018, off Nantucket, New England, en route from Antwerp to New York with a cargo of asphalt. The fire was extinguished by the activated fire suppression system, there were no injures to crew, but the tanker was disabled. The tanker was taken in tow on Oct 5 and pulled to New York, arriving there on Oct 8.
