Experts from the Netherlands replacing destroyed wheelhouse

After the allision of the "Amandus" with a pedestrian bridge spanning the lock Obernau in a height of 7,12 metres repairs have commenced in the foremidday of Jan 14. For this purpose experts were sent from the Netherlands. They will fix a temporary wheelhouse on the cabin's upper deck. It was expected that the ship, which remained berthed river upstream of the lock, could resume its voyage on Jan 15. The damage was estimated to be around 100000 Euro. The pedestrian bridge meanwhile has already been re-opened after engineers have investigated it and given green light. Wheelhouse crushed in bridge allision

The "Amandus", 2052 ts (EU-No.: 02322992) allided with a pedestrian bridge on the Main in Aschaffenburg in the evening of Jan 13, 2013. The wheelhouse was completely destroyed and torn off due to the impact and thrown onto the cabins on the aft. The ship had just passed a lock when hitting the bridge which is spanning it. The 68 old master escaped with a shock. The damage to his ship was estimated to be some 10000 Euro. The ship was loaded with two large steel silos when it entered the lock at Obernau running river upstream aroud 8 p.m. The wheelhouse was in extended position to have visibility in spite of the cargo. But the height was too much to underpass the bridge so that the top of the wheelhouse crashed against the bridge. The ship was docked, repairs to enable it to proceed started on Jan 14. Ship traffic on the Main was not affected. The bridge did not suffer significant damage but will have to be thoroughly investigated by engineers regarding its structural identity. Amandus lightered and raised

The "Amandus" was raised on May 17, after the cargo of stones was lightered the previous days. About 2 p.m. the ship was so far unloaded that the water could be pumped out and the ship raised. The salvage was undertaken by Mammoet Maritime jointly with Hebo using the sheerlegs "Ajas" and "Amsterdam". The tugs "Goenland" and "Spitsbergen" and the "Hebo Cat 9" as well as a HEBO Rescue Rib were on scene. The wreck once it was dewatered wastaken to Lelystad.
