River bottom is getting filled up again after accident

The accident of the "Albis in Dresden from Mar 14-21 caused more damage to the Elbe bottom than presumed. The gravel was washed away on a depth of 1,6 meters on a length of 85 meters which is equivalent to the ship's size. On Apr 5 work to fill the hole has commenced and was expected to take one week. The Floating dredger "Meißen“ was engaged to deposit 1300 tons granite from the Neustädter Elbe Port which will protect the bridge pylons in the future. The owner of the "Albis", Lukas Hradsky, stated that the salvage and lightering operation have cost 73 000 Euro, not included the storage of the 800 tons salt cargo in the Albert Port and the Transport to czechia by trucks. While the barge suffered a small hole in the hull, the Albert Bridge suffered slight damage at two pylons which did not affect the structural integrity of the construction. Albis turned around within a few minutes

On Mar 21 the salvage of the "Albis", 1177 ts (EU-No.: 8455001), finally started. The Elbe shores in Dresden were barred at 11.30 a.m., and at noon the tracked vehicles from Czechia, which had been positioned on both river sides at km 54, and the tug "Beskidy" started pulling the ship around. It had a remaining weight of 1200 tons and a draught of 40 centimeters, compared with 1,9 meters in loaded state. Within eight minutes the ship was turned around and freed from the bridge, and if surveys showed that hull, engine and rudder gear have remained intact, it may continue sailing. The river bottom was meanwhile sounded by the sounding vessels "Biela“ and "Domfelsen", and if the depth of the river has not changed, the Elbe may be re-opened for ship traffic soon. Lightering of salt almost completed

On Mar 20 the cargo holds of the "Albis" have been emptied almost completely, so that the salvage could start on Mar 21. At 11.30 a.m. traffic over the Albert Bridge will be stopped and the electricity on the building shut down. A safety zone will be established with a radius of 400 meters around the barge. At noon two track vehicles jointly with the tug "Beskydy“ will start to turn the bow of the barge river upstream. As soon as she is in the right position, she will support the salvors with own engine. According to plan, she might be sailing again at 2 p.m. Since Mar 19 also a floating dredger was busy digging the salt from the barge onto a lighter.
