First Saltie to be in Duluth Sunday

The first saltie of the 2016 shipping season is expected to sail into the Twin Ports this weekend. The Albanyborg, which flies the flag of the Netherlands, will be in Duluth around 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. The ship will dock overnight at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. The 472-foot Albanyborg was the first foreign-flag vessel to enter the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway system after it opened on March 23. The vessel will spend Monday docked at the Port Terminal while bulkheads are erected inside its cargo hold to prepare for loading grain. It will then head to the CHS Terminal on the Superior side of the harbor to load 10,000 tons of spring wheat for Italy. Visit Duluth ran a contest for the Northland to guess when the first saltie will be here. More than 2,100 people entered the contest. Officials will announce the winner on Monday.
