Skipper of ferry convicted for negligence in maritime traffic
The Malmö district court has convicted the skipper of the 'Agnes af Torekov' for negligence in maritime traffic. On the morning of Aug 7, 2024, the ship had run aground approximately 300 meters off Hallands Väderö. There were 29 passengers on board, all of whom escaped unharmed. The skipper has now been convicted of negligence in maritime traffic by Malmö District Court. Th emaster, who had worked for the shipping company for four years and had sailed this route many times, chose to deviate from the regular route a little over a kilometer from the island in order to moor the ship on the short side of the pier and therefore needed to take an extra turn. However, a navigation error caused him to misjudge his position. When the ship ran aground, the maritime rescue service was immediately alerted. Water entered the bow and the ship began to leak diesel. The evacuation took place quickly and less than an hour after the accident, all passengers had been taken to safety to Halland's Väderö. During the voyage, there was also a visitor in the wheelhouse, which is contrary to the Väderötrafiken shipping company's rules. The skipper stated that this was a common occurrence, but that he did not speak to the guest when the grounding actually occurred. The Malmö District Court considers that the skipper has failed in good seamanship and believed that his negligence could not be considered minor. He was therefore convicted of negligence in maritime traffic and must pay 40 daily fines of 150 Swedish crowns each, which amounts to a total of 6,000 Crowns. The same skipper was involved in an incident a few weeks earlier where young people and children sailing were hit by the ship. Two teenagers and a small child had to be rescued by people in nearby boats, who picked up the shocked children from the water.
