Cruise ship takes Asian crew members home

Mon Apr 20 12:56:14 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Costa Mediterranea' was continuing its tour of Italian ports in order to embark crew members to return to Southeast Asia. Back from the Indian Ocean, the vessel had made a first stopover in Naples from April 7 to 9, then on April 10 entered the port of La Spezia in order to disembark some personnel and embark crew members, including Filipinos and Indonesians, from other vessels, such as the 'Costa Pacifica'. Departing on April 13, the ship arrived in Brindisi on the April 16, where the 'Costa Fortuna' had already been moored, in order to transfer personnel there too. The ship was originally scheduled to arrive in the Asian region at the end of November with a view to its transfer to the new Chinese company CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping, which already received its sistership, the 'Costa Atlantica', at the beginning of the year. The repatriation of cruise ship staff was currently being very complicated due to border closings and drastic reduction in air connections. The 'Costa Mediterranea' will therefore take advantage of its transit to Asia to bring home many crew members from this area.

Cruise ship takes crew members home

Tue Apr 14 09:59:12 CEST 2020 Timsen

oCsta Crociere was preparing to use the 'Costa Mediterranea' to get crew from the Philippines and Indonesia home. According to Costa's plan, the ship first sailed to La Spezia on April 10. European crew were disembarked, as crew not required for operational reasons that can also get home. All other crew members, with the exception of the Filipino and Indonesian crew aboard, were then moved to the 'Costa Pacifica'. Costa was working with Governments and air companies in order to guarantee a safe travel back to home. Meanwhile, Filipino and Indonesian crew aboard the 'Costa Pacifica', except for those needed for minimum safety manning, will be transferred to the 'Costa Mediterranea' which then sailed to Brindisi, ETA April 16, and meet the 'Costa Fortuna', taking on the Filipino and Indonesian crew from that ship. Finally, the 'Costa Mediterranea' will set her course for Shanghai with projected port stops in Indonesia and the Philippines to disembark crew. Costa said it is working closely with local government and manning agents to get crew home safely. It was unknown what the company's plans were for the ship in China, but the 'Costa Mediterranea' along with the 'Costa Atlantica', have recently been transferred to Carnival Corporation's joint venture with China State Shipbuilding.

Crew exchange in La Spezia

Fri Apr 10 23:03:46 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Costa Mediterranea' arrived in La Spezia in the morning of April 10 and will remain moored alongside the 'Costa Pacifica' until at least April 12. On the 'Coast Pacifica' there were currently 950 crew members, while on the 'Costa Mediterranea' were 750. There will be an exchange of personnel so that people from the Far East will be concentrated on the 'Costa Mediterranea'. After a new stop in Brindisi for a similar operation it will head to the Far East. The 'Costa Pacifica' will continue to remain in the port of La Spezia until the end of the emergency. The Costa and MSC cruises were suspended until May 30. The La Spezia terminal was taking care of the logistics to get spare parts and supplies on board.
