Fisherman died after falling over board
On Sep 30, 2020, enquiries were under way into the death of a crew member of the 'Acorn - INS 237', the 45-year-old John McTaggart from Lossiemouth, who died after falling over board four miles east of Stonehaven in the early hours of Sep 29. The Inverness-registered vessel alerted the Coastguard at 1.54 a.m., and a major search was launched, which was involving Aberdeen and Stonehaven lifeboats and a Coastguard helicopter from Inverness. Nearby commercial vessels also responded to mayday broadcasts to help in the emergency search. After McTaggart was recovered from the water, he was pronounced dead. Investigations were launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal. The Marine Accident Investigations Branch confirmed it was also investigating the tragic circumstances.
Fishing vessel towed to Kirkwall after total power failure
A total power failure for the "Acorn" resulted in a five-and-a-half hour tow for the RNLI lifeboat at Kirkwall on Aug 23, 2014. The Shetland Coastguard asked the RNLI to launch at 6.41 a.m. after the fishing boat with six people on board had complete electrical system failure and could not start her engine. The lifeboat crew mustered at the station and then departed at 6.50 a.m. The lifeboat "Margaret Foster" arrived on scene at 7.50am at the location nine miles south east of Auskerry and shortly afterwards started towing the fishing boat to Kirkwall. At 12.30 p.m. the lifeboat entered Kirkwall Bay and the pilot boat "Kirkwall Bay" departed Kirkwall to rendezvous with the lifeboat and to assist with berthing the "Acorn". The fishing boat was safely alongside Kirkwall Pier at 1.25 p.m., the lifeboat arrived back on station at 1.40 p.m. and was refuelled and ready for service again at 1.50 p.m. Report with photo: http://rnli.org/NewsCentre/Pages/Kirkwall-lifeboat-tows-stricken-boat-into-safety.aspx
