Bunker Spill in Singapore After Oriental Pioneer collides with Atlantic Hero
Two bulk carriers collied in Singapore this morning (July 2) resulting in approximately 100 metric tonnes of fuel oil being spilled, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement today. No injuries have been reported, with port operations, and traffic in the port and the Strait of Singapore, all said to be unaffected. MPA said at about 05:30 hours local time it was notified that South Korean-registered bulk carrier, Oriental Pioneer, and a Bahamas-registered bulk carrier, Atlantic Hero, had collided at about 6.6km south-west of Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. The bunker spill resulted from damage to one of Oriental Pioneer's bunker tanks.

The “Atlantic Hero” with a cargo of coal ran aground at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal after colliding with some rocks surrounding one of the Bridge of the Americas’ pillars on May 18, 2010, at 6 p.m. The ship was temporarily stranded but the accident did not damage the bridge’s steel structure, and vehicles were circulating normally. PCA tugboats were used to tow the ship free at 8:15 a.m. on May 19. Traffic on the Canal was not affected by the incident. The cause of the accident was still unknown.
