Drill platforms in distress in cyclone

Wed May 26 10:09:00 CEST 2021 Timsen

As the cyclone Yaas was approaching the north coast of Odisha-West Bengal between Paradip and Sargar Island on May 25, 2021, the Oil & Gas industry has reduced the crew of the 'Olinda Star' from 88 top 28 off Yanam as a precaution. At 1 p.m. three derelict drill platforms went adrift, the 'Aban II' in position 16 40 24N, 082 24 19E the 'Olinda Star' in position 16 40 24N, 082 24 18E, and the 'Deepsea Fortune' in position 16 22 28N, 081 58 34E.

Rig adrift in cyclone

Fri Nov 27 18:57:18 CET 2020 Timsen

The laid up 'Olinda Star' went adrift in the Bay of Bengal about 40 nautical miles south of Kakinada in the cyclone Nivar. There were no people on board. In December 2018, the rig had developed a heavy list during the cyclone Phethai passage. The AIS went off on Nov 25, 2020. In 2018, the ‘Olinda Star’, then 35-year-old and operating in the KG Block basin off the coast of Kakinada, Adrhra Pradesh, got its 120-odd crew evacuated by two platform supply vessels operating in the area on Dec 14/15. A team of international experts mobilised by Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has salvaged the rig later in the month. At the request of ONGC, the Indian Navy airlifted 13 salvors onto the semisubmersible platform on Dec 17. INS Chetlat, a water-jet propelled fast attack craft, assisted in the operation. A previous attempt to board the rig with a commercially-operated boat launch proved unsuccessful. The rig could be righted by pumping ballast water.
