Syrians choose Lebanon port as gateway to Europe

Thu Oct 15 09:00:47 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Every day, hundreds of people at Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli board a ship bound for Turkey -- but for most, the trip is anything but a relaxing holiday. The ship returns nearly empty, because most of those on board are not tourists but Syrians setting out on the first stage of a journey to escape their country's conflict and build a new life. These Syrians are mostly middle-class and have the benefit of valid travel documents, meaning they can take advantage of the visa-free entry Turkey offers Syrians. But once they reach Turkey's shores, at the ports of Tasucu or Mersin, they join the thousands who have gone before them, paying smugglers exorbitant fees and risking their lives to continue their journey onwards to Europe. At the port, Lebanon's largest after that in Beirut, many are reluctant to admit the purpose of their trip. Pulling three large suitcases behind him, Abu Yahya says he has come from Damascus with his wife and two children. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/world/731192/syrians-choose-lebanon-port-as-gateway-to-europe

Syrians use Lebanon as transit point to Europe

Tue Sep 22 10:55:18 CEST 2015 arnekiel

(Xinhua) -- Syrian displaced Um Mohammad was aware that finding a new life away from her hometown in the devastated city of Homs is a risky matter, but still chose to leave amid death threats. Um Mohammad spoke to Xinhua while waiting with three of her children at the main entrance of the Tripoli port in northern Lebanon, to embark the ship that would carry them to Turkey where her husband has been living for almost a year. "Most of the travelers on aboard are Syrian going to Turkey to attempt entering the European Union (EU) from there," she said. Since two years ago, the port has become the transit point for Syrians travelling to Turkey. Abou Khaled, who is also among the Syrians waiting to board the ship, told Xinhua that he is trying to leave from Turkey to the EU. He said "with 2000 U.S. dollars, a small boat would smuggle us from Turkey to a Greek island, then we will try to enter Europe by land," he said. http://www.globalpost.com/article/6653207/2015/09/20/feature-syrians-use-lebanon-transit-point-europe

Lebanese Army officials say an Israeli drone crashed in the waters off Tripoli on Saturday, reports Reuters. “At around 8:30 am (0530 GMT) on July 12, a drone belonging to the Israeli enemy went down in the port of Tripoli, and the army has taken the necessary measures,” the Army command said in a statement, without elaborating. A security official said the pilotless aircraft crashed into the sea. http://www.marinelink.com/news/lebanons-crashes-israeli394479.aspx
