Vessel speed restriction zone established 100NM South of Providence, Rhode Island
NOAA has announced that voluntary vessel speed restriction zone (Dynamic Management Areas - DMA) has been established 100NM South of Providence, Rhode Island to protect an aggregation of 3 right whales sighted in this area on 10 July 2013. This DMA is in effect immediately through 25 July 2013. Mariners are requested to route around these areas or transit through them at 10 knots or less. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states that civil penalties assessed against three large commercial vessels for violating seasonal speed limits intended to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whales this last fall have been paid in full. Providence
The city of Providence is set to receive $10.5 million in federal funding to modernize its main port. The funding was announced Friday by the state's congressional delegation. Officials say the money will allow for the purchase and installation of two new harbor cranes. They say the cranes will help the port be better equipped to handle container operations. They say the project will also create hundreds of jobs. The port says the rented cranes it currently uses are 30 years old and often break down.
