Kuwait closes two ports to marine traffic on bad weather
Kuwait has halted traffic at two of its main ports — Shuwaikh and Shuaiba — due to low visibility and high winds, officials at the ports said Monday. The directors of marine operations at both ports said visibility was down to less than 1.5 miles (2.4 km) and wind speeds were as high as 31 knots (57 km/hour), the state-run KUNA news agency reported Monday. Shuaiba, 45 km south of Kuwait City, has 20 commercial and container berths, including liquid bulk cargo for petrochemicals company Equate, and an oil pier managed by Kuwait National Petroleum Company. Shoaib Ali, the director of marine operations at Shuaiba said there were currently three ships at anchorage at the port and three in the exit area awaiting better weather to leave. Shuwaikh, north of Kuwait City and Kuwait’s main commercial port, has 21 berths which are used for containers, general cargo, grain carriers and bulk commodities such as cement. Source: Platts
