DP World likely to shift to new terminal in 2019

Tue Mar 19 11:34:54 CET 2019 arnekiel

DP World said it is likely to start using the fourth terminal at its flagship Jebel Ali port in the second half of 2019, after utilisation of the terminal was delayed due to a softening market. The ports operator said the terminal is essentially ready for operations and has more cost efficiencies than Terminal 1.

Maersk Says It’s No Longer Able to Ship Qatar Bound Cargo from Jebel Ali

Wed Jun 07 13:55:09 CEST 2017 arnekiel

(Reuters) – Maersk, the world’s biggest container shipping line, can no longer transport goods in or out of Qatar after Arab countries imposed restrictions on trade with the tiny Gulf state, the company said on Tuesday. Shipping lines normally transship cargoes from the United Arab Emirates port of Jebel Ali to Qatar, which relies heavily on imports by sea and land. A Maersk Line spokesman said: “We have confirmation that we will not be able to move Qatar cargo in and out of Jebel Ali.” “We expect disruptions to our Qatar services. The situation is very fluid,” the spokesman said, adding that Maersk would notify customers about alternative options as soon as possible. http://gcaptain.com/maersk-says-its-no-longer-able-to-ship-qatar-bound-cargo/

JebelAli pilot says how crane collapse incident occured

Tue May 23 07:17:34 CEST 2017 arnekiel

A pilot with ‘extensive’ knowledge of berthing operations at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port has pointed blame at the terminal operator for the collapse of a quay crane earlier this month following a collision with a CMA CGM container ship. In a news story by Cruise Arabia & Africa, the source has cited DP World’s attitude towards hiring staff and training as the main reason for the accident. The marine pilot, who has not been named, also criticised the Container Terminal 1 basin design for making larger ships turn too sharply when trying to berth. The source said: “In that situation, you have two choices, either you go full astern and hope you stop in time, or you increase speed to get more headway.” They added that leaked CCTV footage of the accident seemed to show the ship powering through the turn in an attempt to help port control. https://www.porttechnology.org/news/details_jebel_ali_crane_collapse
