Nearly 2,000 passengers stranded in ports due to ‘Auring’

Sun Jan 08 17:25:27 CET 2017 arnekiel

ILOILO CITY—At least 1,896 passengers have been stranded in ports in Iloilo and Negros Occidental after sea travel was suspended due to Typhoon “Auring.” Travel to and from Iloilo and Negros Island has been suspended after the Negros provinces, Guimaras Island and southern Iloilo were placed under Storm Signal No. 1, along with other areas. The Coast Guard suspended trips of fast craft plying between Iloilo and Bacolod cities and roll-on, roll-off (Roro) vessels between Iloilo and Negros Occidental, according to Lt. Cmdr. Ramil Palabrica, Coast Guard Iloilo station commander. Engine trouble forces vessel to return to Iloilo City

Wed Apr 20 09:47:55 CEST 2016 arnekiel

ANOTHER vessel of Trans-Asia Shipping experienced engine trouble as it left Iloilo City for Cebu City at 7 p.m. Tuesday. MV Trans-Asia 2 was already within the vicinity off Siete Pecados Island of Dumangas, Iloilo City or around 10 nautical miles from the Iloilo City port when one of its two engines malfunctioned. Philippine Coast Guard Cebu Station Commander Agapito Bibat said they received a report on the incident at 8 pm so they ordered the vessel’s captain to return to the Iloilo City. “Mas maayo pa’ng mobalik sila kaysa mopadayon unya mas delikado na hinoon kon maguba ang laing makina, gabii pa gyod (it’s better for them to return rather than continue and it’s more dangerous if another engine malfunctioned and it’s night by then),” he said. Philippine Coast Guard Iloilo City deputy commander Petty Officer Leo Olmos said Trans-Asia 2 returned to port at 10:30 p.m. The vessel carried 559 passengers and 48 officers and crew and left the Iloilo City port at 6 pm bound for Cebu City. It was supposed to arrive in Cebu City at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Upon returning to the Iloilo City port, some passengers decided to get a refund from the shipping company. The passengers may transfer to Cokaliong vessel which is set to depart at 7 pm tonight for Cebu City, Olmos said. The captain of Trans Asia 2, Lynnielo Tiongson, is expected to submit marine protest before the Philippine Coast Guard Iloilo City Station later today. Cruise ship terminal planned in Iloilo

Fri Jan 08 17:45:10 CET 2016 arnekiel

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is hoping to develop a cruise ship terminal in Western Visayas this year.. Atty. Helen Catalbas, DOT Regional Director, said the Iloilo City International Port in Loboc, Lapaz and another one in northern Iloilo are being considered for the project. Catalbas disclosed that they are just waiting for the recommendation of foreign cruise consultants who came here to make an assessment of the commercial port in Loboc and other potential facility. “We are excited to know if which part of Western Visayas is feasible and have greater opportunity to be developed,” she said. She, however, said that consultations with local government units and other stakeholders will also have to be undertaken. Cruise ships during their call usually stay from six to 12 hours. The regional director disclosed that the Royal Caribbean Cruise is looking for a destination that could cater 4,500 to 6,000 guests. Even Boracay Island can only accommodate 3,000, she said.
