Indonesian fishing vessel apprehended off Darwin

Mon Oct 31 09:54:11 CET 2016 arnekiel

Maritime Border Command (MBC) within the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) have apprehended an Indonesian fishing vessel suspected of illegally fishing off the coast of the Northern Territory yesterday morning. The vessel was first spotted by an MBC aircraft during a surveillance flight. HMAS Maryborough responded to the sighting and after a short pursuit, personnel intercepted and boarded the Indonesian registered fishing vessel about 16 nautical miles inside of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (AEEZ); approximately 175 nautical miles north-west of Darwin. Officers located around 20 kilograms of fresh sea cucumbers, 12 bags of dried sea cucumbers between 20 and 50 kilograms each, 15 kilograms of fish and one crayfish. Diving equipment, along with a spear gun and several wet suits were also found on board. http://www.afma.gov.au/indonesian-fishing-vessel-apprehended-darwin/

Authorities Investigating Source of Spill at Darwin Harbour

Sun Aug 21 12:47:01 CEST 2016 arnekiel

Authorities at Australia's Darwin Harbour are investigating the source of a large spill, of what is believed to be HFO, at the port, Australian media reports. "If it’s a fuel oil, it is either from some fuel oil storage or perhaps from a large ship but we can’t be certain as to what it is at the moment," Dr. Bill Freeland, chair of the NT Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). "Consequently, it's formed a very thin sheen that is moving very rapidly up and around the harbour, backwards and forwards." The spill is said to have been initially reported at 4 a.m. local time on Friday, with sheening since reported to be covering about 30km across the harbour area. Freeland says the sheen is too thin to take any effective remedial action, adding that it is "expected to disperse over time." http://shipandbunker.com/news/apac/355426-authorities-investigating-source-of-spill-at-darwin-harbour
