Crane ship on fire
In the morning of Sep 9, 2018, the "Titan II", one of the five Oceanography ships that have been stranded in the area of the Protected Area of the Laguna de Términos, caught fire. The fire started at 8:30 a.m., and until noon, no extinguishing work had commenced. The ship was stranded since Feb 4, 2016, when it ran aground off Ciudad del Carmen, at kilometer 13 of the Sabancuy-Carmen highway, near the Bahamita area due to a lack of fuel. Former workers suspected arson. On Jan 27, the "El Caballo Eclipse", another of the five ships of Oceanografía had capsized 1,5 kilometers from the island in high swells. In A First, Mexico 'Returns' Crimea Vessel To Ukraine
Ukraine's state gas company says Mexican prosecutors have ordered a seized ship belonging to a Crimean company to be returned to Ukraine rather than Russia. Naftogaz, the ultimate owner of the ship, published the announcement on its website on February 18. The ship, Titan-2, belongs to Chornomornaftogaz, a Naftogaz subsidiary registered in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula whose forced annexation by Russia in 2014 triggered international condemnation and Western sanctions against Moscow. The vessel had been leased and subleased since 2003, until its latest operator, the Mexican company Oceanografia SA de CV, went bankrupt. Local financial institutions then seized the ship. http://www.rferl.org/content/mexico-crimea-vessel-ukraine/27560620.html
Crane ship aground off Ciudad del Carmen
The AHTS "QMS Delta", "QMS Mariachi", "Isla Pelicano" and "Cosmos 1" were trying to pull the grounded "Titan 2" off the coral reef Laguna de Términos nearby a private residential at Carmen island. Until Feb 15 the efforts were unsuccessful and the "Titan 2" increasingly buried in the sand. The crane ship had parted from her anchor mooring at Carmen-Puerto Real in winds of 65 km/h and drifted ashore at Bahamita beach with a crew of eight on board during a cold front passage on Feb 4, 2016. It had been morred 12 miles off the Laguna de Términos since two years.
