Longliner abandoned and sinking after fire
The "Tenn Ming Yang 268", 100 gt, issued a distress call at on May 7, 2019, at 04.30 a.m., in the Indian Ocean in pos. 34 54 S 041 50 E about 630 miles east of Durban, stating a fire on board. The 16 crew abandoned ship into life rafts and requested immediate assistance. The MRCC Cape Town and MRCC Taiwan were alerted, and the MRCC Cape Town requested all ships in the area to respond and assist. A nearby vessel, the "Maersk Lanco", was originally instructed to conduct the rescue operation, but was subsequently told to stand down after it was informed that Taiwanese authorities had directed a sister vessel to rescue the fishermen. At 7 a.m. all 16 fishermen were picked up from the life raft in good health. The longliner was still burning and slowly sinking.
