Crew man died of heart attack
On Febb 23, 2015, at 10.51 p.m. the Hermanus duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) reporting the "Silver Challenger" was requesting urgent medical assistance 12 nautical miles off Gansbaai. The fishing trawler had radioed a distress call to Telkom Maritime Radio Services reporting a 47 year old crewman collapsed onboard, suffering a suspected heart attack. Fellow crew had initiated CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and were heading towards Gansbaai and requesting urgent medical assistance. NSRI Hermanus launched the sea rescue craft "South Star" accompanied by a WC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic and met up with the casualty boat off Gansbaai but sadly, on arrival on the scene, despite CPR efforts, the fisherman was declared deceased. His body was brought to Hermanus harbour aboard the sea rescue craft and handed into the care of Police and the Forensic Pathology Services.
