Yacht sank after fire
The Port Authorities of Paxos, Corfu and Igoumenitsa were informed in the morning of Aug 9, 2022, about a fire on the 'Shaula', which had sailed from Brindisi on Aug 4, between Paxos and Antipaxos. On scene were northern winds of 4 Beaufort. Under the coordination of the Unified Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue of the Coast Guard, two patrol vesselsimmediately went to the position, as well as the m/v 'Poseidonas Junior' with officers of the Port Authority of Paxos on board, a boat of the Municipality of Paxos with an officer of the Port Authority of Paxos on board, a team from the Fire Service of Paxos and a representative of the Civil Protection, as well as the fire boat 'Rhos Gatsos'. The seven people aboard the blazing yacht were transferred with its auxiliary boat to the nearby French m/v 'Rodeo' in good health and were safely transported to the port of Gaiou in Paxos. The fire was brought under full control and the "Shaula" was subsequently sunk. No marine pollution was observed. Pollution from combustion residues was found in an area of fifty square meters, which was brought under control by placing decontamination materials by the Port Authority and then collected. A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Port of Paxos.
