Fire gutted trawler - skipper rescued from liferaft
The skipper of the "Peace N Plenty" has been rescued after his fishing boat caught fire off Devon on April 30, 2019, at 6 p.m. He reported to the Falmouth Coastguard it was on fire about six miles off Salcombe before abandoning ship to a life raft with a radio. Noth Salcombe Lifeboats had already launched to their weekly training exercise, to a man in difficulty aboard his yacht, when they were tasked to the position five nautical miles South West of Salcombe. Both lifeboats were on scene within minutes, rescuing an uninjured fisherman from his life raft. Once confirmation of no further casualties was confirmed the ILB returned the casualty to shore and to his waiting family. For safety reasons the ALB remained on scene until dusk. The blaze continued to burn, and navigational warnings were issued. A counter-pollution team was monitoring the situation. The fire has since gone out and the boat is being towed back to harbour at Brixham. It will be inspected by a Maritime & Coastguard Agency surveyor.
