Liveaboard gutted by fire
The 'Ocean Pure 1'was gutted by a fire on Dec 31, 2024, at 4.45 p.m. LT, while anchored off Waigeo Island, Raja Ampat. No one was injured, all ten guests and the crew got off the liveaboard in pos. 00°20’961” S 130°11’962” E. The fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit behind the dryer machine in the laundry room. The captain instructed the crew to attempt extinguishing the fire and issued a distress call via VHF Channel 16. By 5:30 p.m. the fire had grown uncontrollable, forcing the captain to order the evacuation of all crew members and passengers to Yefinat Island using lifeboats. One crew member with severe burns was immediately evacuated to a hospital in Waisai via a rubber boat owned by the KLM 'Lamima', which had responded to the emergency distress signal via radio.
