Fishing vessel ablaze off Cedeira
The MRCC in A Coruña and Finisterre coordinated the rescue of the eight crew members of the "O Busi" in the afternoon of March 14, 2017. The ship had caught fire 12 miles northwest of Cedeira where it had its base. They alerted Salvamento Marítimo at 5:55 p.m. after a fire broke out in the engine room. Immediately, the helicopter Helimer 215 , which was carrying out an exercise near Punta Langosteira in A Coruña, headed to the area. At 6:19 p.m. its crew localized the fishermen in a liferaft and safely hoisted them one by one. The men were in good condition, although they were transferred to the health center. The lifeboat "Salvamar Shaula" was deployed to control the "O Busi" which was now adrift, and reported that fishing gear, such as nets and rigging, surrounded the vessel, making it difficult to carry out any rescue work. In addition, the "SAR Gavia" departed late in the afternoon to the area to assess the situation and evaluate if the blazing vessel could be taken in tow.
