Longliner on fire
On July 16, 2019, the "Myojin Maru No. 8" caught fire and went adrift in the Indian Ocean. The 24 crew members oabandoned ship and had to be rescued. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority received an alert from the Japan Coast Guard around 7.45 a.m. An AMSA's Challenger jet was deployed to assist with the SAR operation, 1000 kilometres west of Perth. Another Japanese fishing vessel, the "Seifuku Maru 88", was in the area and successfully rescued all crew members at 10.30 a.m. All of them were safe and uninjured. The AMSA and the Japan Coast Guard continued to investigate the cause of the fire and assess any pollution and environmental impacts of the incident.
