Tanker abandoned after three explosions

The "Java Bonitos" suffered three explosions and fire in the engine room on Aug 15, 2014, at 630 p.m. LT while transiting the Bangka Strait, between Southern Sumatra and Belitung Island in the Java Sea. of the 21 crew members on board, one died and three were missing. The crew had gathered in the back of the ship, and the captain ordered the men to jump into the sea. Three remained missing after the crew had abandoned the vessel and were rescued, some of them badly burned. On Aug 16 the tanker was still drifting in the area, and salvors were waiting for the hull to cool down, before boarding her to look for the missing sailors and proceed with salvage work. The patrol boats XVIII-3001 and XVIII-2005, XXVIII-1701 and XXVIII-1702 were searching for the missing crew. The vessel was en route from Palembang Sumatra to Jakarta and was transporting 16000 barrels of condensate. It had departed from Plaju, South Sumatra on Aug 14 afternoon and was scheduled to arrive at Anyer, Banten, on Aug 16.
