Hold flooded with CO2
The fire aboard the "LMZ Pluto" broke out in a room where pieces of rubber and cloths were stored while the ship was on its way from Antwerp to Martas with a cargo of scrap. The crew sealed the hold where the fire was raging and then flooded it with CO2. At 8.30 p.m. the alerted MIRG team went on board to investigate the fire. The hold and the ship were cooled from the outside. At 10.30 p.m. the ship was moored in the Sloehaven in Flushing East to keep the waterway clear and to make the ship easier to access for follow-up operations. The ship has its own fire brigade on board. In the morning of March 24, the Zeeland fire brigade boarded the ship for controls. It finally left the port of Flushing on March 29 at 6.20 p.m. and resumed the voyage to Martas.
Fire on Wester Scheldt
On March 23, 2018, at 7.20 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the "LMZ Pluto" on the Wester Scheldt near Ossenisse. She had sailed from Antwerp at 5.20 p.m. bound to Turkey. The Zeeland Safety Region immediately alerted a KNRM lifeboat and the MIRG, a unit of the fire brigade that specializes in combating fires on board ships. Later it has been decided not to bring the MIRG on board the ship but towards the ship. The crew first tried to extinguish the fire themselves. The ship has been taken to the Put van Terneuzen to be able to anchor there. The tugs "Carl", "Multratug 20", "Multratug 32" and "Union 6" were deployed to the bulkcarrier. Also the patrol boat "RWS 79" went alongside.
