Blazing vessel abandoned off Cabo de Salou
The MRCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Tarragona coordinated the rescue of the 10 crew members of the 'L'Avi Juanito' in the early hours of Dec 18, 2024, after the ship had suffered a fire 10 nautical miles south of Cabo de Salou (Tarragona). At 4.04 a.m. LT a MayDay call was issued by the fishermen, announcing that they had a fire and that they were abandoning ship. The call was received by the coastal station in Valencia and, immediately, from the MRCC n Tarragona, the SAR boat 'Salvamar Fomalhaut' was deployed from the port, along with the Helimer 207 helicopter based in Reus (Tarragona) and the tug 'Punta Mayor' from Tarragona. The f/v 'Hermanos Brull Vila' also responded to the distress call, indicating that it was three nautical miles away and heading towards the area, while the 'L'Avi Juanito' radioed in that its crew had already entered life rafts. At 4.47 a.m. the Helimer 207 reported that the crew was being picked up by the 'Hermanos Brull Vila'. Approximately one hour later, the 'Salvamar Fomalhaut' arrived in the area and went alongside the 'Hermanos Brull Vila', confirming that all the castaways had been rescued unharmed and proceeded to transfer them to the port of Tarragona. When the Helimer 207 left, the 'L'Avi Juanito' was completely engulfed in flames. The ship sank at 6.19 a.m., and the 'Punta Mayor' kept watch in the area to check that there was no contamination and to remove any remains that had floated to the surface.
