Luxury yacht sank after fire
In the morning of Sep 9, 2017, at 8.45 a.m. the "Koi" caught fire enroute from Valletta, where she had sailed on Sep 7, to Itea in order to take on board charter guests. Smoke started billowing from the vessel in an area between Katelios (Kefalonia) and Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea. The crew of 4 men and 3 women were rescued using liferafts and boats by the crew of the fishing vessel "Afroditi".which transported them to the nearby Agios Nikolaos port in northern Zakynthos.. The ferries "Kalvos" and "Nissos" immediately rdiverted from their routes to Kyllini. After the crew was saved, they left and continued to Sami and Killini. The fire had started in the engine room and spread within minutes across the whole ship. A fire boat arrived from Patras and tried to tackle the fire with its water cannon. At 11 p.m. the yacht, although half-sunk, continued to flare, while a tug continued the attempts to extinguish the fire. The area is being monitored for possible pollution.
