Truck removal stopped as tires were on fire
On May 8, the removal of vehicles from the 'Royce I' at Pier 3 of Merak was temporarily stopped due to being blocked by a truck whose tires were on fire. Truck drivers lined up to collect their belongings that were still left in the trucks. Officers were forced to remove cargo from trucks that were blocking the transport of other vehicles. The vessel was tilting 20 degrees. Currently, 28 private cars, 16 motorbikes and four expedition trucks have been successfully removed. There were still 49 vehicles on board. The Water Police of the Banten Regional Police and the National Police Headquarters Laboratory for Research conducted a TKP investigation to investigate the cause of the fire. . Two bus drivers with red plates suspected of being the cause of the vessel fire were presented at the crime scene. Two drivers, were taken to the vessel to take part in the crime scene investigation. The Police, has yet to provide an official statement on the cause of the fire on Royce - I , because the TKP investigation has not been completed.
Ferry towed to port after fire
The 'Royce 1' could be towed into the port of Merak on May 6 by two tugs. The ship had suffered an engine failure, after it caught fire. A total of 97 vehicles will also be removed from the ship. 13 vehicles were burnt. All passengers were rescued and taken to the Merak Port command post.
Ferry on fire in Sunda Strait
A truck aboard the 'Roye 1' caught fire on May 6, 2023, at around 3 a.m. WIB in the Sunda Strait, shortly after leaving the port of Merak, Java, bound for Bakauheni, Sumatra. As the fire spread, thick smoke filled the decks, and hundreds of passengers had to be evacuated onto liferafts and assisting good samaritans.
