The KM "Awu" caught fire in the evening of March 25, 2019, at the Janata Marina Indah (JMI) Shipyard Unit 1 in the Tanjung Emas Port Area, Semarang. There were no people on board at the time the fire started and no works under way. The ship was unlit. The fire suddenly emerged from the captain's cabin on the sixth deck, spread around and engulfed the bridge. Firefighting, including tugs with water cannons and nine fire engines, was commenced. By 11 p.m. they still did not gain control of the blaze until March 26. On March 27 inspectors entered the damaged areas for surveys. Ferry developed a list
The "Awu" developed a list of five degres to starboard side shortly after leaving the port of Bima in West Nusa Tenggara with hundreds of passengers on board on Dec 17, 2018. The ship anchored one mile off Bima and requested assistance, first of all the passenger's evacuation. SAR teams were dispatched, but in the meantime the ferry managed to return to Bima, where she was safely berthed and the passengers disembarked.
