Death Toll From Indonesian Ferry Fire Rises

Tue May 23 07:13:30 CEST 2017 arnekiel

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee announced Monday that it believes that the deadly fire aboard the ro/pax ferry Mutiara Sentosa 1 originated in a truck on the first deck. "The first fire source came from a green truck," said committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono. The identity of the vehicle's owner is not known, and the investigators are looking into the nature of the truck’s cargo. The crew attempted to contain the fire with sprinklers but were not successful, and the blaze grew out of control. Survivors told local media that they jumped off the ship in desperation when the smoke and heat became too intense. At least five people died in the blaze, and nearly 200 were rescued by good samaritan vessels and SAR rescue boats. The official death toll from the accident has risen to five. All of the victims have been identified and their remains returned to their families for burial. http://www.maritime-executive.com/article/death-toll-from-indonesian-ferry-fire-rises

Fire started on truck and was followed by explosion - 198 persons rescued

Sun May 21 17:06:32 CEST 2017 Timsen

The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) will investigate a truck onboard the "Mutiara Santosa I". From several witnesses, the fire started from a green truck covered in blue tarpaulin parked on the first deck. The crew and passengers initially managed to put down the fire, however the blaze started again. A small explosion occurred when the tarpaulin of the truck was opened. The explosion shocked the passengers, who then immediately tried to flee as the fire spread. Once the investigation has been completed, a team from the commission will draw up new standards to prevent dangerous cargo from getting onboard ships. The Surabaya Search and Rescue Team evacuated 198 people from the ship, 161 passengers and 37 crew members. This figure did not match up to the ship’s manifest. Based on the manifest data, the ship was carrying 134 passengers. However, there were no reports of missing family members among the survivors. There were reports about a backup driver and also cleaning service on the ship who were not included in the manifest by the company. The joint team has officially ended the search for victims on May 21, but will continue to monitor the situation for the next seven days. There were still two vessels, the "Wisanggeni" from Semarang and the "SAR 225 Widura" from Basarnas Surabay remaining on standby at Maselembu island. The victims were identified as: 1. Ahmad Sofyanto (30), a resident of Dusun Karanglegi, Gabus, Grobogan, Central Java 2. Eko Hadi Prayitno (35), a resident of Dusun Blog Agung, Tegalsari, Banyuwangi 3. Bambang Sugito (43), resident of Dusun Sekar Geneng, Cerme, Gresik 4. Rachmad Sirry (59), a resident of Bendorejo Hamlet, Pacet, Mojokerto 5. Supriyadi (37), a resident of Jalan Ronggolawe, Sumber Pucung, Malang The five bodies were taken by State Ship "Basarnas Widura - SAR 225" from Basarnas to the Port of Tanjung Perak Surabaya on May 21 at around 03.30 a.m. Three victims who suffered injuries, Subari from Situbondo, Saptana from Malang, and Risandi from Jakarta were immediately rushed to the Primasatya Husada Citra Hospital (PHC) in the Tanjung Perak Surabaya area for further treatment. 84 passengers were saved by the "Dharma Kartika IX" of Dharma Lautan Utama and arrived ashore on May 20 at 11:24 p.m. Three passengers and five casualties were taken ashore by the "Basarnas Widura - SAR 225", and two passengers aboard the "Meratus Makassar". At least 28 people missing, five confirmed dead

Sat May 20 13:12:46 CEST 2017 Timsen

28 of the 187 people aboard the "Mutiara Sentosa I" were still reported missing in the morning of May 20, after the vessel caught fire in the waters off the Masalembo Islands in Sumenep, East Java. While five fatalities have been confirmed, 154 persons were rescued. Four of the five passengers killed in the incident have been identified, being Bambang from Gresik, Sofyanto alias Yusuf from Grobogan (Central Java), Prasetyo alias Prayit from Banyuwangi, and Supri from Surabaya. The search for the 28 passengers who remained missing was interrupted in the evening. The rescued passengers were checked at a community health center in Masalembo Islands on May 20. 193 people have been rescued so far, 37 crew and 161 passengers. The number of missing was unclear. The agency’s initial figure for the number of people aboard, apparently based on the vessel’s manifest, was 178. It is not uncommon for ferries in the Indonesian archipelago to be overcrowded or to carry more passengers than declared. In panic, some people jumped into the sea without wearing lifejackets or waiting for lifeboats. Two helicopters and several ships had searched for survivors throughout the day.
