Crew safe after fire off Mauritius
The "Jordan No. 5" with 16 crew members on board reported to be on fire in position 24 16S 059 00E, about 260 miles southeast of Port Louis on Mar 31, 2016. The Regional Operational Centre for Surveillance and Rescue Reunion coordinated a major air-sea system to locate and recover the castaways. The longliner had been underway to fishing grounds in international waters south of Reunion when it issued a distress signal in the morning. Several commercial and fishing vessels came to assist the ship. A Dornier aircraft of the Coast Guard of Mauritius took off in the afternoon. The tanker "Captain John" saved seven rmen from a life raft and two men from the sea. and the "Lyric Sun" saved another seven survivors. All 16 men were in satisfactory health condition. The "Captain John" sailed to Mauritius to land the men there and the nine survivors aboard the "Lyric Sun" continued on to Asia where the castaways will handed over to the authorities upon their arrival in Singapore.
