Fri Feb 11 11:57:41 CET 2022 Timsen

The 17.5-metre yacht 'Katherine May' was destroyed by a fire in the morning of Feb 10, 2022, in the waters between Port McNeill and Malcom Island. A radio relay was received at 8:10 a.m. about the boat on fire in the Broughton Strait near Lady Ellen Point. She arrived there around 8:40 a.m., and the Coast Guard arrived on scene and there was a seine boat just off of the burning vessel. The ferry was then released by the Joint Rescue Centre. The Coast Guard emergency fast rescue craft 'Cadboro Bay' from Port Hardy was dispatched. There was one person on board the distressed vessel and he was aided by nearby vessels. Shah says the person was taken to hospital in Port McNeill by Coast Guard but didn’t appear to have any injuries. The “Katherine May” was currently listed for sale through Pacific Boat Brokers out of Nanaimo. described as a trawler motor yacht that was built in 1976 and was well-maintained. The asking price for the vessel with three staterooms, two bathrooms and a shower was $97,500. It sank at 11:30 a.m. The Coast Guard Environmental Response Team was now dealing with the situation.
