One dead after fire on gillnetter
On July 29, 2016 at 8:06 p.m., the "Samatheo" with four people on board was reported on fire at Cape Breton. The distress message was immediately relayed to the CROSS Etel which dispatched an ECU 40 helicopter of the National Gendarmerie Mimizan, the lifeboat "SNS 208 - Saint Nicolas II" of the station Cape Breton and the customs boat "DF 43 - Haize Hegoa" which was on standby in the area. The gillneter was sevene nautical miles off the semaphore Messanges. At 8:27 p.m., the helicopter of the gendarmerie arrived on scene. Two fishermen were hoisted from the water on board the helicopter, and then transferred onto the customw boat. At 9:03 p.m., the lifeboat took on board the two other sailors, one of whom was unconscious and was declared dead at 9.30 p.m. The three survivors were transported to the hospital in Dax. The "Samatheo" was still on fire and presented a hazard to navigation.
