Trawler gutted by blaze

Wed Apr 07 10:09:11 CEST 2021 Timsen

On April 1, 2021, at 11.05 p.m. the 'Normandie' caught fire in the middle of the port of Grandcamp-Maisy in Calvados. Several boats in the harbor managed to redirect the blazing trawler to the docks, where firefighters were able to extinguish most of the fire from the shore but could not save the ship. The intensity of the fire and the swell made the work of the firefighters difficult, despite the dispatch of a team specializing in interventions on ship fires which carried out reconnaissance and secured the ship at the dock. The lack of stability of the ship did not allow the fire figthers to progress in safety. About ten vehicles and thirty firefighters from Grandcamp-Maisy, Isigny-sur-Mer, Bayeux and Caen were mobilized to intervene at the quayside and on the ship. With the low tide the ship came to rest on the bottom of the harbour, and its flotation was not guaranteed.
