Ferry towed to Gismarvik after unloading weapon systems
On Dec 10 at 11 a.m., two tugs took the "Finlandia Seaways" in tow in Husøy. The ship was towed to Gismarvik, where it was berthed at the deep water quay at 3 p.m. the same day. During the recent days, the weapons systems and the anti-aircraft protection to be used at the Polish airfield Rzeszow-Jasionka, near the border with Ukraine, which it had loaded, was transferred onto the 'Belgia Seaways' (IMO: 9188233) at the quay at Husøy, being was guarded by armed guards from local forces from the Home Guard. The defense had to secure the area on Husøy, and created a "temporary military restricted area". In the dead of night, personnel carried out the reloading of the anti-aircraft systems from one ship to the other. Weapons and military equipment transferred onto another ship
The transport of Norwegian weapons and military equipment could be continued as planned towards a Polish airport near the Ukrainian border. The cargo was transferred from the 'Fainlandia Seaways' to another ship ain Haugesund. The incident has not affected the mission. The Norwegian Armed Forces do not wish to provide further details about when or where the delivery will take place. The 'Finlandia Seaways' remained stationary in Haugesund as of Dec 9.
Ferry ran aground
On Dec 5, 2024, at 8.17 p.m. the 'Finlandia Seaways', with 23 people on board, ran aground north of Kopervik in Rogaland, while en route from Orkanger to Gdynia with military equipment to secure an airport near the Ukrainian border due to rudder problems amid strong winds. The ferry got stuck 400 metres from the shore in Karmsundet, southeast of the Hydro Aluminum plant on Karmøy. in pos 59° 18.15' N 005° 19.4 E. A slight water ingress could be controlled. A reception was set up at the Hydro factory in the event of an evacuation of the ship, which was not required. The tugs 'Borgoy' and 'BB Server'as well as the patrol vessel ' Bergen' were on scene. Also a rescue helicopter and the NSSR-lifeboat 'Horn Rescue' attended the scene. After the ferry was refloated, it was taken back to Haugesund, where it was berthed on Dec 6 at 3.30 a.m. UTC.
