142 passengers evacuated from burning vessel
The "Erasmus" smashed into a pier at Canary Wharf in London after a fire started in its engine room on Sep 11, 2016 around 3.40 p.m. All 142 passengers on the vessel were evacuated from the boat in the afternoon, with Metropolitan Police confirming there were no serious injuries. The ship smashed into the pier with the starboard side bow after seemingly losing control following the start of the small fire near the business district in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Smoke billowing out from its rear, careering into the wall before scraping along the side of the pier. The emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene of the crash, and all the passengers were evacuated by two other river craft. The blaze was extinguished before the arrival of the fire brigade, but river police remained for at least an hour after the crash. Six members of crew were immediately evacuated, while three remained on board the ship.
